THE WORK OF THE GREAT DUTCH PAINTERS IS EXHIBITED IN THE MUSEUMS OF AMSTERDAM

 From the late 16th century till the 18th century there was a big painting tradition in the Netherlands and Belgium. This school produced one of the best painters in history, Rembrandt. Vermeer, Ruysdael, Frans Hals and Jan Steen are other 17th century painters of this Dutch painters Schools. Below you see a picture of a milkmaid by Johannes Vermeer.

 

 

The most important works of Rembrandt and most of the other painters mentioned before are exhibited in the Rijksmuseum. The Rijksmuseum is by far the biggest Museum in the Netherlands and in fact the National Museum. It is a huge Museum where you can spend a whole day easily. The former house and studio of Rembrandt are maintained and the interior is reconstructed according to old documents which give detailed information about how it looked in Rembrandts time. This 'Rembrandthuis' is also very well worth visiting. Below you see a picture of the Rembrandthuis.

 

Vincent Van Gogh lived in the second half of 19th century. After his death he has become one of the most admired impressionists painters. Most famous paintings of Van Gogh are exhibited in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. Below you see a picture of "the Sunflowers" from Vincent Van Gogh

 

 

At the Amsterdam Historical Museum there is a gallery of so called 'Schuttersportretten'. This is accesible without any charge. These 17th century Schuttersportretten are paintings of groups of volunteers for the defense of the city. This 'Schuttergalerij' is very impressive and absolutely worth visiting.
