  EVENTS AND EXHIBITIONS

AROUND AMSTERDAM

Amsterdam is located quiet central in the Netherlands. Distances to attractions as the flower fields, the cheesemarket in Alkmaar, the Zaanse Schans and the villages of Marken and Volendam are not big. All mentioned above is within 100 kilometres from Amsterdam.

Interesting to visit in the rest of Holland are the flourishing flowerfields during the spring (april/may). During the rest of the year a good way to see flowers is to visit the flower auction of Aalsmeer. This is possible during the whole year. Aalsmeer is only 20 kilometres south of Amsterdam and near the airport.

Below you see a picture of the flower exhibition at the 'keukenhof':

The city of the Hague is worth visiting because of the Royal Palace, the parliament and the coastal village of Scheveningen. Very near The Hague is the city of Delft. The painter Vermeer lived and worked in this city, the monument of William of Orange the founder of the royal family is there and the city has an interesting china factory. Combining The Hague and delft is very easy and logical, because there is only 10 kilometres between both cities and they are well connected. The painting below is View on Delft, painted by Johannes Vermeer. Under is a picture of china making at a Delft China workplace.

In 'De Zaanse Schans' you can see a lot about how life in Holland was let's say a century and a half ago. You can see how they operated the windmills, how they made cheese, what the interiors of houses looked like. All houses at 'De Zaanse Schans' are of wood, which gives it a very different atmosphere. Below is a picture of the 'Zaanse Schans':

Another interesting place to see is 'De Zuiderzeemuseum'. This shows the life in villages around the former Zuiderzee, which is now IJsselmeer. It is now a lake because the gate to the North sea is closed now, but untill 1932 it was open and around the nowadays lake there were a lot of fishing villages, often with their own traditional costumes. The reconstructed such a place and named it Zuiderzee Museum. This is around 75 kilometres (50 miles) from Amsterdam.
